12-23 mm. Occurs in Central and Southern Europe as far East as Western Ukraine. In Hungary it inhabits closed broad-leaved mountain forests. Not uncommon. Foodplants are a range of broad-leaved trees including hornbeam (Carpinus), beech (Fagus) and oak (Quercus). Larvae develop in relatively damp stumps and fallen wood. Pupate in the xylem, in a chamber constructed along the axis of the fibres. The emergence hole is circular. Adults fly from June until August. Mainly found at stumps and stems, rarely on flowers.
