10-21 mm. A holarctic species of conifer stands, common in Hungary. Attacks a range of conifers, particularly pine (Pinus sylvestris). Oviposits on stumps and dead wood to which the bark is still firmly attached. The larva feeds on the inner bark. After two years the mature larva constructs a birdsnest - like pupal chamber in late summer between bark and wood. Some adults eclose (but do not leave the tree) in September of the same year while others eclose following spring. All of the adults emerge in April and can be seen until July around fallen or harvested wood. By the time beetles emerge the bark of the affected wood is only loosely attached and removing it will reveal a range of life cycle stages of this insect.
