Caloptilia spp.
Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae

Four, closely related species occur together on maples, and they can not be distinguished based only their mines. For the precise identification either the larvae or preferably the adults are needed. Uni- or bivoltine species. Hosts are A. pseudoplatanus, A. platanoides and A. campestre. The young larvae mine in angle of veins on the underside of the leaves. Later leave the mines and make a cone by rolling the lobe tip downward (one larva usually makes more the one cone). The small mines of the young larvae are well visible on the leaf.
