Csóka, György and Kovács, Tibor (1999): Xilofág rovarok - Xylophagous insects. Hungarian Forest Research Institute. Erdészeti Turományos Intézet, Agroinform Kiadó, Budapest, 189 pp.

Mn: Kis kopogóbogár  /  En: Common furniture beetle

Several related species (Xestobium rufivillosum, Ptilinus pectinicornis, Xyletinus ater and so on) have similar life histories, causing similar damage symptoms that are hard to distinguish. They are therefore treated together here. Smallish (2.5-5 mm) beetles. They live in dead timber, included wood used in carpentry (furniture, wood covers, wattles). They pass their entire life cycle inside the wood. The males produce knocking sounds to attract females. The length and the patterning of these sounds are species-specific. Many generations can develop in a single piece of the wood, eventually destroying it completely. They can cause severe damage in furniture and in wooden works of art.
