The wingspan is 19-33 mm with females slightly larger than males. Foodplants are the poplars (Populus), occasionally the willows (Salix). Most often develops in hybrid poplars for 1 or 2 years. Flies from late April to mid July, the peak being in late June. The females lay their eggs singly or in groups of 2-3 on the 2-5 cm thick trunks of the foodplant. Preferred egg-laying sites are wounds on the trunk. The larva is white and two hook-like chitin formation can be seen on its last abdominal segment. The pupa is yellow, bearing hook-rings on the abdominal segments. Its presence is indicated by wood dust and frass extruding from the trunk, and an asymmetric gall-like swelling. The attacked trunks often break. Palaearctic species, can be found everywhere in Hungary. One of the most serious pests of young poplar plantations. Its mass occurrences are usually connected with Human mistakes. The pruning of young trees executed in the flying season provides perfect oviposition sites, encouraging outbreaks of the species.
