The wingspan is 30-70 mm. Develops for 2 years, overwintering twice as a larva. The adults fly in June-July. Polyphagous, developing in many broad-leaved species (Malus, Prunus, Sorbus, Syringa etc.). Unlike the goat moth, it prefers younger stems and branches. The fully-grown larva is ca. 60 mm long. Eurasian species, widespread and common in Hungary, occasionally causing damage.
