Characteristic of old lower montane oak and beech forests. Relatively uncommon in Hungary. Larvae develop under the bark of a range of broad-leaved trees, later feeding in the heartwood, where they pupate. Development takes at least two years. Adults can be seen in June and July on the foodplant and wood piles.
