8-15 mm. Native to North America and introduced to Europe in infested ash timber. First recorded in Hungary in the early 80s, this species is still spreading and is now relatively common in SE Hungary. Larvae feed beneath the bark of a range of broad-leaved trees, particularly fruit trees, later feeding and eventually pupating in the heartwood. Adults leave the wood through circular emergence holes, which occur at high density in mass infestations. Adults can be found on sunny, warm days from mid May to late July on the foodplants and wood piles. Adults are very fast-moving, and rapidly move away when disturbed.
