16-23 mm. Eurosiberian species. Occurs on the lower slopes of mountains, hills and lowlands. Prefers warm, dry and semi-dry forest types and closed oak forests. Develops in decaying wood of broad-leaved trees (stumps, lying logs, wood compost, anthills containing decaying wood). It makes a characteristic pupal case, also typical of the hermit beetle and the related species mentioned above. Adults can be found at forest edges, gardens. Common in Hungary
