12-20 mm. Palaearctic species. Not uncommon in Hungary in poplar forests in a range of habitats. Larvae develop in poplars, particularly in trembling aspen (Populus tremula). Development takes place beneath the bark of freshly dead wood with minimal penetration of the heartwood. Woodchips produced by this species are characteristically long. Pupates in the heartwood. Adults fly in May and June, and can be found on the trunk and in the crown of the foodplant. Attracted to lights.
