Rare at lower elevations. Can also be found in cold and humid ash and alder forests. Prefers a cold and humid climate and shady undisturbed older forests. Develops at least for 3 years in decaying stumps and logs of Carpinus, Fagus and Quercus. Both larva and pupa and even the adult can overwinter. The adults prefer forest habitats, swarming after sunset - particularly in humid and warm periods. Not rare in Hungary.
